OU is first in the state to offer a "test-optional" admissions process, opening the door to more who want to be OU Sooners

Here at Landers Chevy of Norman, we're proud of our connections to the University of Oklahoma, and love celebrating Sooner accomplishments, innovations and breakthroughs. The latest groundbreaking news from OU: a recent change that will take the focus off standardized testing like the ACT and SAT in admissions decisions, allowing more students a chance to be Sooners! The program will continue through 2025, and makes OU the first public university in Oklahoma to adopt a "test-optional" admissions process.
 

OU has long been a leader in the realm of making admissions about more than just how students did on a single test. The university has had a "holistic" admissions process since 2012. That process judges prospective Sooners on four key factors: academic performance, extra-curricular activities and community work, a personal essay written by the student and letters of recommendation submitted by people who have worked directly with each candidate.

The news of OU's new "test-optional" approach will expand that goal of attracting our nation's best and brightest to OU, allowing students with disabilities, those who don't do well on standardized tests or those who might not have the funds for tutoring to take the ACT or SAT multiple times a better shot at becoming proud OU alumni. Applicants are still encouraged to submit their test scores if they have taken the ACT or SAT, as performance on those tests does sometimes improve a student's chances to win scholarships or to gain admission to OU, but the tests are no longer required for a student's application packet to be considered by admissions officials.
 

“Looking to the future, we view operating as a test-optional institution as a necessary and important move to increasing access to the state’s flagship institution, and this pilot program allows for that consideration,” said Jeff Blahnik, senior associate vice president for the Division of Enrollment Management and executive director for the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. “Test scores can be a helpful tool in determining readiness, but they are not the only measure that projects that. Through our holistic admissions process, we are looking for proven academic excellence and for students who demonstrate grit, perseverance and a passion to make a positive impact on the world.”
