Make Some New Year’s Resolutions… For Your Car!

Between now and your test drive, though, you’re stuck with what you’re driving now. If it isn’t a recently purchased Chevy from Landers Chevrolet of Norman, we’re sorry for that. There are, however, certain resolutions you can make for 2021 that will make every mile better.

CLEAN OUT THE GARAGE: We see a lot of trade-in, pre-owned vehicles at Landers Chevrolet of Norman, in conditions that range from pristine to “almost ready for the crusher.” But we can always tell the vehicles that were garage-kept versus those that spent their downtime parked outside. Sun, rain, pollen, bird droppings, bugs, blowing dust, heat, sleet and snow all give the paint, rubber, chrome and glass of your car a real beating. Over time, it can start to add up. A garage-kept car of the same make, model and mileage will always look better than one that lived outside for the same amount of time. So, if you have access to a garage or even a covered parking space, use it for what it was intended. If your garage is too crowded for your ride, maybe it’s time to give some stuff to Goodwill.

KICK THE TIRES: Dad wasn’t just trying to look cool when he kicked those tires at the dealership. He was checking to see if the tires were under or over-inflated. You don’t have to rely on your boot to check your tires, though. Modern, easy-read digital tire pressure gauges are available at most auto parts stores for under $5. You should get one, too, because most people don’t consider how much depends on their tires, when a blowout at highway speed could spell tragedy. So check to make sure that your tires are inflated to the proper, manufacturer-recommended pressure. You can top them off at most gas stations if needed. Also check your tread depth. Depth gauges are available at auto parts stores, but you can also kick it like dad and do The Penny Trick. Find a U.S. Penny with Abraham Lincoln on it. Put Abe head-down on your treads. If the tread is deep enough to reach his eyebrows, you’re good. if it doesn’t reach his head, start shopping for tires.

SEE CLEARLY: Imagine if you had a pair of glasses, and you never, ever cleaned them except with a nicked, cracked rubber squeegee and rainwater. It would probably be pretty hard to see through those glasses after awhile, right? Well, if you neglect your windshield wipers and windshield washer fluid, that’s what you’re doing with your windshield. Wipers aren’t just a convenience item, they’re a crucial part of your vehicle’s safety systems, and keeping them in good condition is as crucial to your safety as buckling your seatbelt. So periodically check your wipers. If you see any nicks, splits or cracks, you’ll need to replace them for perfect, streak-free safety. The same goes for your windshield wiper fluid. That stuff is important! Not only is it a pleasing blue, it contains special solvents and lubricants to help wipe away grime and dirt from your windshield without scratching it, and without hurting the rubber, paint and glass of your car. Like the wiper blades, it’s not just convenient, it’s crucial to making sure every drive is as safe as it can be.
