Industry’s First Buckle To Drive System for Teen Drivers

July 30th, 2019 by

Chevrolet has introduced the industry’s first Buckle to Drive technology that can help young drivers remember to put on that seat belt! This modern technology is standard in the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse, and once the system is activated, it can actually prevent the vehicle from moving if the driver does not have their seat belt on.

Buckle to Drive is only available through your new Chevy’s Teen Driver mode, which is accessible through the in-dash touchscreen. So next question: how does the technology even work? Good thing you asked! So first things first: the technology is only available when the vehicle is in Teen Driver mode, with parents setting up the system through a password protected screen so your young driver can’t turn it off without your permission. With Buckle to Drive enabled, if the vehicle is on and the driver’s seat belt isn’t buckled, Buckle To Drive will not allow the driver to shift out of park. Instead, the driver will hear an audible alert saying “Buckle seat belt to shift.” Once they’re buckled up, they can shift and drive normally.

“Buckle to Drive is Chevrolet’s latest feature designed to encourage young drivers to develop safe driving habits right from the start,” said Tricia Morrow, Chevrolet safety engineer. “Buckle to Drive is embedded in Chevrolet’s Teen Driver system and is aimed at helping remind teens to buckle up every time they get behind the wheel.”

Chevrolet’s main concern is safety, and we’re all concerned about the risks of NOT buckling up. This technology came about during an internal pilot study which concluded that with this awesome feature, seat belt usage increased by 16 percent compared to a standard chime seat belt reminder.

“Safety is our number one priority at Chevrolet,” said Morrow, the mother of a teen driver. “I come to work every day with my children in mind because there is nothing more important than their safety. My hope is that Buckle to Drive will help guide more young drivers to wear their seat belts and encourage positive conversations among teens, their peers and parents.”

This amazing safety technology will be standard on the upcoming 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, Malibu and even the Colorado! Are you ready to see what the Buckle To Drive feature is all about? Swing by Landers Chevrolet of Norman today so we can tell you more.
