Chevy Montana: What We Know About the Small Pickup
The compact unibody truck segment has recently blown up over the past couple of weeks. Other automakers like Ford and Hyundai have dipped their toe into this segment that was previously neglected in the United States. For years, these small pickups have done well in other markets such as Australia where they are dubbed as “utes”. These model the El Camino if you’ve been a long-time Chevy Fan. While these new introductions will be a little bigger than that, there is still a need for a truck bed on a vehicle with good fuel economy and easy maneuverability.
Over the past couple of weeks, Hyundai has released their Santa Cruz small pickup and Ford has released the Maverick compact pickup. What has consumers shocked is the capability for the price. These small pickups are starting at around $20,000 and get exceptional fuel mileage of about 40 mpg with even a hybrid powertrain!
The Chevy Montana has been offered in other markets such as Brazil, but with the introduction of the new generation we hope GM will bring this truck to the states to compete against the Santa Cruz and Maverick. The engine choices will probably be a small-displacement four-cylinder with a turbocharger. We probably won’t see full 4×4 capability unless they roll out a Z71 option but we can expect all-wheel drive to take care of most driver’s needs. The truck should return mid-30s for fuel mileage and start in the low $20,000s. This would slot under the Colorado and have similar styling to the current Chevy Trailblazer. We expect this to be a hot seller for commuters who need the capability of a truck bed for their gear or weekend projects.
