Chevy announces best-in-class fuel economy for Duramax-equipped 2021 Chevy Tahoe

First introduced as an available engine option of the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the 3.0-liter Duramax inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel has knocked our socks off with its smooth and quiet operation, incredible low-end torque and unbeatable fuel economy. Given that, when folks at Landers Chevrolet of Norman heard Chevy planned to offer the 3.0 Duramax turbo-diesel as an available engine for the all-new 2021 Chevy Tahoe, we knew it was going to be a game changer for our customers, particularly when it comes to getting the most out of a tank of fuel.

Well, the numbers are in on fuel economy, and just as we suspected, the figures are very, very impressive. How impressive? In both four- and two-wheel drive models, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe equipped with the 3.0-liter Duramax is the most fuel-efficient full-size SUV on the road today, delivering an EPA-estimated 28 highway, 21 city and 24 combined mpg in rear-wheel-drive models, and EPA-estimated fuel economy for four-wheel drive models of 26 highway, 20 city and 22 combined mpg.

“The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings a refined engine experience to the already impressive redesign of the all-new 2021 Tahoe and Suburban,” said Bob Krapes, Chevrolet Trucks marketing director. “Combining the segment’s best fuel efficiency with increased space inside of the vehicle compared to the previous generation equals an all-new Tahoe and Suburban ready for the next long road trip or family adventure.”

Though the 3.0-liter Duramax is a very refined engine, offering smoothness and noise levels that were simply just impossible as little as ten years ago, Chevy engineers further refined the engine for use in the 2021 Chevy Tahoe, which is the first full-size Chevy SUV with a diesel engine since 1999, and the first-ever full-size SUV with an inline-six diesel.  Those refinements include even more enhanced noise abatement and an all-new engine control module, designed exclusively to provide the responsiveness and flexibility SUV owners demand.

Even so, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe with the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel is still a workhorse, delivering  277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, plus 8,200 pounds of maximum towing in two-wheel-drive models. For even more confidence while towing, Duramax-equipped 2021 Tahoe models include a standard exhaust brake.

“The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel brings responsive torque and a smooth driving experience, ideal for those who tow or spend many hours behind the wheel,” said John Barta, assistant chief engineer for the 3.0L Duramax. “Not only is the 3.0L Duramax a refined engine, but the total experience benefits from the efforts to deliver enhanced driving dynamics in Tahoe and Suburban through the independent rear suspension and available Magnetic Ride Control and Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension.”

Deliveries of 2021 Chevy Tahoe models with the available 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel are scheduled to begin before the end of the year, with the engine available on LS, LT, RST, Premier and High Country models.
