Chevrolet announces first all-electric Silverado, to be built in Detroit

Since all the way back in 1911, Chevrolet trucks have been a legend on the road, on the jobsite and at play, helping millions more Americans find their way to brighter futures through hard work and leisure. Now, Chevy trucks are poised to make a bold leap into the next century of innovation, with the announcement that Chevrolet will design and build an all-electric Chevy Silverado right here in America.

On April 6, Mark Reuss, president of Chevrolet parent company General Motors, announced that Chevy will build an all-electric version of the Chevy Silverado at the company’s new Factory ZERO plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.

According to a press release from GM, the all-electric Silverado — which is being kept tightly under wraps for now — will be designed and built from the ground up to be an EV, mating Chevrolet’s groundbreaking Ultium battery platform to the rugged engineering that made Silverado a legend.

The electric Silverado will reportedly offer an incredible 400 miles of range on a single charge, while leaning on the incredible torque and horsepower potential of modern DC motors to actually improve tough-truck must-haves like maximum towing and hauling capacity.

To see how formidable that might be, one only has to look at the all-electric GMC Hummer supertruck. Produced by Chevrolet’s sister-brand GMC, the Hummer truck features up to an incredible 11,000 lb.-ft. of torque. Similar, staggering torque and horsepower numbers will likely be on the table for the electric Silverado as well.
