2021 Silverado features innovative Multi-Flex tailgate

In the earliest days of Chevy trucks, the tailgate was literally a hinged wooden board that could be latched up to help keep your watermelons, turnips or whatever else you were hauling to market from tumbling out on takeoff. And, that's where the tailgate has pretty much remained for over a century of great Chevy trucks: a hinged gate that latches in the up position and can be let down to allow access to the stuff in your truck bed or to provide a convenient sitting spot for you and at least two companions, if you wish.

That was then, however, and the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500's all-new Multi-Flex Tailgate is now. A six-function marvel that's simply going to change the way you use your Chevy Silverado, the Multi-Flex Tailgate is available as an option on all 2021 Chevy Silverado trims for the 2021 model year.

Where the standard 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 tailgate is what you would expect, the optional Multi-Flex tailgate includes a unique inner section at the top, distinguishable by a crisp factory parting line. With that section up, the tailgate performs exactly as you expect, and exactly like any other 2021 Silverado tailgate. Touch a button on your key fob or on the tailgate latch, however, and that's where things get interesting. Besides functioning as just a plain ol' tailgate, here's a few of the other functions of the 2021 Silver Multi-Flex Tailgate are:

LOAD STOP: Often when hauling, you may need to haul something that's a bit too long for your truck bed, forcing you to carry your load with the tailgate down. Put down the Multi-Flex tailgate, however, and you can pop up a full-width load stop to increase the hauling length of your bed by a full 18 inches.

FOLD-DOWN CENTER SECTION: With the 2021 Silverado's wide beltline and deep, cargo-ready bed, it can be a chore to reach over in the bed to grab things you're hauling. If you don't want to lower your whole tailgate, the center section of the Multi-Flex tailgate flips down, making retrieving items from the bed a cinch.

A HANDY STANDING DESK: Working on the go often means using laptops and tablets at the jobsite. You can either try to balance that expensive laptop on the side of the bed or potentially scratch up your hood. Or, with the Multi-Flex Tailgate up and the center section of the gate down, you have a wide, level, scratch-free surface that can be used while standing behind the truck. There's even a 120 volt outlet near the tailgate in case you need to charge!

A SET OF FOLDING STEPS: Trucks are great for hauling, but there are few moments when using your truck that are more dangerous than getting in and out of the truck bed. One slick spot on the bumper or slippery hand-hold, and you're going down, hopefully not injuring yourself in the process. The Multi-Flex Tailgate on the 2021 Silverado 1500, however, takes some of the worry out of getting in your truck bed. Just drop the tailgate and hit a button, and a set or rugged steel steps drops down from the Multi-Flex Tailgate like magic. Capable of supporting up to 375 pounds, these step stow just as quickly and easily. Trust us: the optional Multi-Flex Tailgate is much cheaper than a hospital stay.
