Making History: Dale Earnhardt Jr. to Pace the 2019 Daytona in Chevy Silverado

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been selected to drive an all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado as the pace truck to lead the field to green for the upcoming Great American Race! This will be a history-making event as this is the first time ever that the Daytona 500 will be paced by a pickup truck and not a traditional car. And with 2019 being the 61st running of this fan-favorite racing event, there’s no better time to do something a little bit different for a change! Earnhardt Jr. is excited and honored to partake in the race in such a way this year: "I’ve had a lot of fun and a lot of success at Daytona over the years, and now I can’t wait to get out on that track in a Silverado. Away from the track I’ve driven Chevy trucks all my life, and I’m excited to have this unique experience of pacing the Daytona 500 with the Silverado.”

Earnhardt Jr. was a natural choice for this exciting role -- he’s been voted the Most Popular Driver for the last fifteen consecutive years, won The Great American race in both 2004 and 2014 and was a two-time winner of the July Daytona race as well, to name just a few accomplishments. According to Jim Campbell, Vice President of Chevrolet US Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, “Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the perfect choice to pace the race because of his enthusiasm for the sport, his long history with Chevrolet and his love of trucks. It’ll be exciting to have Dale lead the field to green in the strongest, most advanced Silverado ever.” Earnhardt Jr. will be driving a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado outfitted with the 6.2-liter V8 engine paired up with a 10-speed automatic transmission that generates up to 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Chevy has had the honor of pacing the Daytona 12 different times over its history -- five with a Chevrolet Corvette, and seven with a Chevrolet Camaro.
