18 Sooner Facts Before the 2018 Sooner Season


Football season is fast and furiously approaching here in Norman, Oklahoma, and the OU Sooners are gearing up for their first match against the Florida Atlantic Owls on September 1. While we wait with excited anticipation for the upcoming 2018 season, here are 18 Sooner facts to keep your mind busy:


1. The first ever year of OU Sooner Football was 1895 -- this year will be the 124th season!


2. The Sooners have played a total number of 1,260 games before this year.


3. OU holds the most number of conference titles in the nation with a total of 47.


4. The Sooners also hold the record for the highest number of wins in the modern era (1946 onwards) with 640 wins.


5. And with 35,116 points scored overtime, the OU Sooners are also number 1 in the nation for the all-time points scored record.


6. The first ever publicly aired Sooner TV game was on October 9th, 1948, against Texas.


7. Since then, the Sooners have appeared on TV for 396 games.


8. When the Sooners traveled on a plane for the first time, they flew to Yankee Stadium in New York to play the Army on September 27, 1946.


9. Since the program’s inception, the Sooners most consecutive wins in a row maxed out at 27 in 1953.


10. With only 12 losing seasons ever, OU has the fewest in college football history.


11. 162 All-Americans have come from the lineups of the OU Sooners.


12. The Sooners’ first-ever bowl game was in the 1939 Orange Bowl and they played against Tennessee.


13. Six OU Sooners have received the highly-coveted Heisman Trophy, the most recent of which was Baker Mayfield in 2017.


14. In the AP Poll, the Sooners spent 406 weeks in the Top 5, which is longest of any program in the nation.


15. Of those 406 weeks, 101 of them were spent in the No. 1 spot which is yet another national record.


16. The OU Sooners have won eleven total Big 12 Conference Titles, including the 2015-2017… do you think they’ll win it this year, too?
